Geraldine Schmitt

Geraldine A. “Gerry” Schmitt, 90, died at 1:25 p.m. Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at St. Anthony’s Health Center due to complications from pneumonia, with her daughter and son-in-law by her side. Born October 7, 1923 in Weeping Water, Nebraska, she was the daughter of Joseph and Ruth (Lozier) Jones. She was a homemaker and member of the Main Street United Methodist Church in Alton. Mrs. Schmitt enjoyed quilting and was an accomplished artist having sold several of her paintings. On May 30, 1946 she married James Schmitt. He preceded her in death on January 12, 2008. Mrs. Schmitt had resided at Provisions Living in Godfrey for the past two years and spent the last four weeks at Blu-Fountain Nursing Home.

Surviving is a daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Hank Vize of Godfrey, a son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Linda Schmitt of Ephrata, PA, three grandchildren, Derek Vize of Godfrey, Tammy McIntyre of Edwardsville, and James Schmitt of Ephrata, two great granddaughters, Jaden and Riley Willis, one great grandson, William Schmitt, two brothers, Forrest Jones (Casey) of Utah, and James Jones of California, one sister, Lois Hampton of Roxana, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Gilbert “Pick”, Joseph and Michael, and a sister, Betty Click.

 Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, August 15, 2014 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 16, 2014. Father Steve Pohlman will officiate. Burial will be at Upper Alton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
