James Winters

GRANITE CITY- James L. Winters, 94, passed away at 1:30 am on December 16, 2015. He was the son of the late James W. and Rua (Carter) Winters. He married the love of his life, Sylvia Creighton, on June 15, 1963 in Venice. She preceded him in death in August of 2014.

He was proud of his service to his country in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. After being discharged, he was employed at Al’s Television and Repair Shop in Granite City prior to joining the United States Postal Service. He loved Cardinal baseball and Rams football and was glued to the television during baseball and football seasons.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Paul Wayne Winters and his wife Margaret, a sister, Helen Cox, and a nephew, Mark Winters.

He is survived by a sister-in-law, Doris Schmidt and nieces, Elizabeth Ammann (John) , Mary Cox, Sally Manush (Charlie), Patricia Allen (John) , Carol Smith (Jim), Pam Welsh, Janet Erwin (Louie), Donna Mullins (Jack), Linda Hornbeck (Joe), Denise Mason (Dennis), and nephew Shawn Schmidt.

A celebration of his life will be held on Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at Irwin Chapel in Granite City. Visitation will be at 10:00 am with services to follow at 10:30 am. Burial will be at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon with Military Rites.

Memorials are suggested to the USO of Missouri in honor of his military service and will be accepted at the funeral home.
