Robert Eugene Spanberger, 84, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 8:15 a.m. on Monday, December 21, 2015 at his home.
He was born May 14, 1931 in Granite City, a son of the late Lawrence and Ella (Dean) Spanberger. He married Elizabeth Jane (Hawk) Spanberger on October 1, 1954 in Granite City and she passed away on July 14, 2002. He retired after 34 years in 1985 from Granite City Steel after 16 years as a crane operator and 18 years as a foreman. He loved fishing and had a keen sense of where the fish were and how to catch them. He also enjoyed attending auctions and turkey shoots. He was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. He will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends. He is survived by a daughter, Laura Jane Spanberger of Granite City; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Daniel Spanberger of Pontoon Beach, Robert Spanberger Jr. of Granite City and Michael Alan and Lisa A. Spanberger of Granite City; three grandchildren, Jodie McDowell, Michael Alan Spanberger II and Bradley Tyler Spanberger; other extended family and many friends. In addition to his beloved wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lawrence A. Spanberger. In celebration of his life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Sunday, December 27, 2015 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. where funeral services will be held on Monday, December 28, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Charles West officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon. Memorials may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children and may be accepted at the funeral home. |
