Richard Stanton

Richard James Stanton, 88, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 12:54 a.m. on Friday, December 28, 2018 at Eden Village in Edwardsville, Illinois. 

Richard was born on June 19, 1930 in Pinckneyville, Illinois, the son of the late Mark Ray and Mabel Irene (Ballheimer) Stanton. He served his country in the United States Air Force, stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska from 1947-1951 as an Aircraft Mechanic.

On October 10, 1953 he married Marjorie Jeannette Byer, the love of his life, in Pinckneyville and she passed away on August 7, 2016.  Richard was a faithful member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Granite City. He worked for Dow Chemical (now Spectrulite) in Madison, Illinois, retiring in 1990, after 35 years of dedicated service to the company. Richard enjoyed many activities. He was an avid gardener and fisherman. He also enjoyed hunting and playing softball in his younger years.

His greatest joy was spending time with his family.  He will be sadly missed and remembered by all, for the love and enjoyment he had for his family and friends.

In addition to his beloved wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mabel Browning Chell; two brothers, Mark Ray Stanton II and John Stanton and sister-in-law, Norma Jean Stanton. 

He is survived by his loving children, Cynthia (Brian) Warden of Pocahontas, Patricia (Ron) Galbraith of Granite City, Susan Stanton of Granite City, Teresa (Dave) Mooshegian of Glen Carbon and Richard Stanton of Bunker Hill; former father-in-law to Sharon Balke-Stanton; proud grandfather to Jessica (Josh) Short, Alyson Warden, Katelyn Galbraith, Kelsey Galbraith, Kimberly Galbraith, Rebecca (Kyle Brewer) Mooshegian, Michelle (Scott) Webb, David Mooshegian, Emily Stanton and Sydnee Stanton and great grandfather to Henry Webb and twins, Westin and Rowen Roberts.  Also survived by brothers, Robert (Janice) Stanton of Granite City and Roger and Kathy Stanton of Warner Robins, Georgia; sister-in-law, Joann Stanton; nieces; nephews; other extended family and friends.

In celebration of his life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Sunday, December 30, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 31, 2018 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Granite City with Father Jeff Holtman as celebrant. 

Burial with full military honors will be at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville.

Memorials donations will be given to the Alzheimer’s Association, American Diabetes Foundation or the American Cancer Society and may be accepted at the funeral home.
