Josephine “Josie” Matthews, 93 of Granite City, Illinois passed away on Monday, February 10, 2020, at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City.
Josie was born on July 18, 1926, in St. Louis, Missouri; the daughter of the late Reverend Luther and Ethel (Johnson) Hampton. Josie was a printer and packager for CPI Photography for Sears and a member of Clark Avenue Church of Christ in Granite City. Josie enjoyed her days of going to church and spending time with her family and will be remembered for all the special times they shared together.
Josie is survived by and will be missed by her son; Terry Matthews of Granite City; grandchildren, Crystal Cooper of Bakersfield, California, Melinda Matthews of Bone Cave, Tennessee, and numerous other close family members and friends.
In addition to her parents, Josie was preceded in death by her husband; William C. Matthews; son, Lee A. “Skip” Cooper Jr.; brother, William “Ted” Hampton; sister, Alma Hampton.
In celebration of Josie’s life, visitation will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2020, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Mike Allen officiating at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City. Burial will follow at St. John Cemetery on Maryville Road in Granite City. Memorial donations are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
