Hursel Earl “Sonny” Wakeford III, 72, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 11:35 p.m. on Thursday, January 28, 2021 at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City. He was born October 3, 1948 in Granite City, a son of the late Hursel Earl “Red” Wakeford II and the late Leota (Niedhardt) McKenna.
He retired from Overnite Transportation after over 20 years of dedicated service as a over the road truck driver. Sonny was a talented and well known singer and drummer throughout his life and was a member of the Musicians Local. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed his days fishing, riding motorcycles, riding and caring for horses. He also loved cutting grass on a riding lawn mower and barbequing for family and friends. He cherished his grandchildren and will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and P.J. Wakeford of Granite City, Jason and Brandi Wakeford of Granite City; a daughter and her fiancé, Jamie Wakeford White and James Hines of Granite City; grandchildren, Jessica (Courtney) Wakeford, Cody (Haley) Wakeford, Justin Wakeford, JD White and Jenah White; two brothers, Kenny Wakeford of Maryville and Ricky Wakeford of Arizona; a sister, Donna Wakeford Brumley of Granite City; many nieces; nephews; other extended family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his former wife, Dauphlin “Dee Dee” Wakeford.
In celebration of his life, a family memorial gathering will be planned for a later date.
