CM Advances Two To The Semifinals In Class 2A

CHAMPAIGN – Civic Memorial advances two to the semi-finals on Friday, Abe Wojcikiewicz and Bryce Griffin both had two wins to advance.

Wojcikiewicz won his preliminary by fall, pinning Brock Hoyd of Riverside Brookfield in 1:15.

Wojcikiewicz, ranked No. 1 at 170 pounds, and undefeated In Thursday night’s Class 2A quarterfinals, he defeated Nathan Kim of Burlington Central 8-1 and will move on to Friday night’s championship semifinals and face Tom Bennett of Chicago, Brother Rice.

Also in the quarterfinals, CM’s  Bryce Griffin won by fall at 138 pounds over Caleb Nobiling of Antioch 3:56. In the prelims, Griffin won by fall over Grant Gensler of Rochelle in 1:45.

Griffin will face Aoci Bernard of Rock Island in Friday’s semifinals.

CM’s  Colton Carlisle, at 182 pounds, lost a tight match 5-4 quarterfinal decision to Matty Jens of Grayslake Central. He had advanced to the quarterfinals with a 17-1 technical fall win over Charles Medrow of Ottawa.

In prelims, Cameron Phillips of Maple Park Kaneland defeated CM’s Bradley Ruckman 7-3. At 132 pounds, Anthony Streib of Antioch won by major decision over CM’s Joey Biciocci 11-2.

At 285 pounds,  Eric Perez-Nava of Midlothian Bremen edged Logan Cooper of CM 4-3.

In the Class 1A championship quarterfinals, Thursday night, East Alton-Wood River’s Aaron Niemeyer and Jason Shaw both dropped tough matches.

Niemeyer, at 113 pounds, dropped an 8-2 decision to Emmett Nelson of Richmond Burton. At 126 pounds, Shaw was defeated by 6-3 by No. 1-ranked and two-time defending state champion Phoenix Blakely of Dakota.

EA-WR went 2-1 in the prelims earlier in the day, including wins by Neimeyer and Shaw.

Niemeyer won by major decision in the prelims over Danny Tay of Colfax Ridgeview  9-0. Shaw won his preliminary round bout by fall when he pinned Ian O`Connor of Glasford Illini Bluffs in 2:45.

At 220 pounds, EA-WR’s Drake Champlin lost his preliminary bout to Jadon Mims of Elmhurst IC Catholic by technical fall.

Also in Class 1A, Roxana’s  Braden Johnson was pinned by Levi Leitner of Tremont in 3:57 in their 152-pound prelim and will await Friday’s wrestlebacks.

In the Class 3A prelims, Alton’s Deontae Forest dropped a 12-1 major decision to Tyler Guerra of St. Charles East and will await wrestlebacks on Friday.
