Edwardsville’s Dylan Gvillo And Drew Landau Moves On To Quarterfinal Round In Champaign

CHAMPAIGN – Edwardsville’s Dylan Gvillo and Drew Landau moves on to the quarterfinal round of the Class 3A IHSA State Wrestling Tournament Thursday in Champaign.

For Gvillo he moved on with a 7-6 ultimate tiebreaker victory over Harrison Konder of Downers Grove North in a 138-pound match.

Gvillo wrestled fourth-ranked Konder, Gvillo led 1-0 after the first period. Konder tied it 1-1 with an escape midway through the second period. In the third period, Gvillo scored an escape and went ahead 3-1 but Konder tied it with a takedown.

With 1:10 left, Gvillo scored his second two-point takedown of the third period to take a 5-3 lead again, Konder rallied to force overtime with a late two-point takedown. After a scoreless first overtime, Konder earned an escape in the 30-second overtime to take a 6-5 lead.

Gvillo came back to tie it 6-6 with an escape in the next 30-second overtime. In the ultimate tiebreaker, Gvillo, finally, won it 7-6 with an escape in the next overtime period to advance.

Landau went ahead 2-0 in his match with a takedown against Hernandez (36-17) but found Hernandez ahead 3-2 moments later. Landau tied it 3-3 before the end of the first period. Landau was able to hold off Hernandez to advance.

Edwardsville’s Jorden Johnson fell behind early to Damien Lopez, after a two-point takedown. Leading 2-0 entering the second period, Lopez scored a three-point near fall to push his lead to 5-0 and then made it 8-0 after a second three-point near fall before getting the pin in 3:07.

Gvillo will face Batavia’s Kaden Fetterolf in Friday’s quarterfinals while Landau, will face top-ranked Tommy Curran. Johnson will face West Aurora’s Moses Quintana in the second round of wrestlebacks.
