East Alton Fire Department Battle Large Train Tie Fire Friday Night

EAST ALTON – East Alton Fire Department responded to the rear of Fischer Lumber Co. in the 200 block of N. Shamrock around 7:10 p.m. Friday night for a large amount of smoke and fire.

East Alton Fire Department responded to investigate; firefighters found a large pile of railroad ties on fire next to the railroad tracks. East Alton’s Ladder Truck gained access to Fischer Lumber property and Engine 4311 secured a water supply from a hydrant on North Shamrock.

East Alton’s Ladder truck and master stream were deployed, with extinguishment and overhaul efforts continuing for several hours. Smoke could be seen from miles away during the fire.

East Alton Public Works was requested to the scene with a backhoe to assist with overhaul. A handline was eventually deployed to extinguish hidden areas of fire. Rosewood Heights Fire Department covered East Alton while they battled the fire.

No injuries were reported, the cause is undetermined at this time.
