Frances Mehelic

Frances Ann Mehelic (nee Steinman) born March 19, 1940, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Granite City, IL passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at the age of 82.

She is preceded in death by her father William Steinman and mother Pauline Steinman (nee Saksa).

Survivors include her husband, Robert Mehelic lovingly married for 52 years, children Paul and Betsy Mehelic, grandchildren Abigail, Chloe, and Louis; Julia and Jim Cleaver, grandchild Bri; and Sarah Mehelic and Ryan Young, grandchild Justin Young; sisters Carole (nee Steinman) and Ray Herschbach, nephew Michael and niece Becky, Audrey (nee Steinman) and Bill Meadows, nephews Matt and wife Sarah Meadows and Tim and wife Marissa Meadows.  On her spouse’s side, she is survived by Mary Lou (nee Mehelic) and John Schwab, children Charlie and Becky; Philip and Patty Mehelic, Jean Creamer (nee Mehelic), Marietta (nee Mehelic) and Dave Dauwalter, nephews Andrew, Joseph, and niece Kathy (nee Dauwalter) and husband Chris Forbes; Michael and Maureen Mehelic, niece Angela; and Andrea Herndon (nee Mehelic). 

Frances and her husband Robert have been faithful members of Holy Family Catholic Church (33 years) and St Elizabeth Catholic Church (20 years) having been married on August 1, 1970, at St Mary’s Catholic Church of Madison Il.

Frances, a graduate of St. Teresa’s Academy of East St. Louis in 1958, had a long career in healthcare as an X-Ray technician at many area hospitals and notably AMAR Medical until retirement. As a sister, spouse, mother, aunt, grandmother, and friend to many, Frances enjoyed spending her time cooking and baking for her family, reading, visiting local historical sites, and viewing picturesque Wilson Park from her picture window.  For 12 years, she and her husband enjoyed numerous trips sponsored by the Granite City Park District.  The multiple annual trips to Fairfield Bay, Arkansas as our summer vacation destination are an enduring memory for the entire family.  Her fantastic cooking, sense of humor, and lovable insights on all topics will be dearly missed by her friends and family.

Visitation is to be held Thursday, January 5, 2022, from 4 pm-7 pm at Thomas Saksa Funeral Home in Granite City, IL 62040.  Mass will be held Friday, January 6, 2022, at 11 am at Holy Family Catholic Church in Granite City, IL 62020 followed by burial at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville, IL 62025.
