Area Wrestlers Had Mixed Results In the Opening Day Of The State Wrestling Tournament

CHAMPAIGHN – It was a mixed results day for area wrestlers in the first day of the IHSA State Wrestling tournament in Champaign. The tournament runs through Saturday.

In Class 1A in the 106-weight class Carlyle’s Tyson Waughtel won by tech-fall with a 16-0 win over Kingston Sawyers of Harlan then in his second match he won another by tech-fall 16-1 over Logan Roberts (Latham). Waughtel will wrestle Friday in the semi-final round.

In the 120-weight class Roxanas Leyton Cobine lost to Aiden Kenney of Coal City with pinfall at 3:43. Cobine will wrestling Friday in the second round of wrestlebacks. In the 126-pound class Brandon Green (Roxana) lost to Brady Grennan (Newman) 10-1. Green will be back Friday in the second round of wrestlebacks.

Logan Riggs (Roxana) faced off against Wyatt Doty (Polo) in the 132-pound class and was pinned in 42 seconds. He will be back on Friday for wrestlebacks. In the 152-pound class Braden Johnson (Roxana) lost to Marco Spinazzola (Peotone) 20-3.

Roxana’s lone winner of the day James Herring won a close match against Alex Cardenas (Peotone) 11-8 but dropped his second match when he was pinned by Jacob Bischoff.

EAWR Drake Champlin went 1-1 on day of the tournament. His first match he had a pin over Drake Dearth (Coal City) and his second match he was pinned by Noah Wenzel last year’s state champion.

CLASS 2A

CM’s Bradley Ruckman went 2-0 for the day in the 106-pound weight class. In his first match he faced Jake Lowitzki and won 13-6 then in his second match he faced Noah Avina with a pin at 1:48. He will advance to the semi-finals tomorrow.

CM’s Caleb Scott went 1-1 for the day. In his first match he won against Joseph Nadig (Rochelle) 4-1 in his second match he faced Bobby Conway (Brother Rice) and lost a close decision 6-3.

CM’s Bryce Griffin went 2-0 with two pins in the first day. In the first match Griffin pinned Nicholas Asllani in 1:48 and in his second match he pinned Hunter Daniel in a very fast time of 48 seconds.

CM’s Abe Wojcikiewicz also went 2-0 in the first round. In his first match beat Alec Miller 17-2 and in his second match he upped the score and beat Amare Overton 16-0 to close out the day in the 170 bracket.

Jesey’s lone competitor Jaydon Busch lost his match with a fall at 5:35 in the match, He faced Alex Pasquale. Busch will be back tomorrow in wreslebacks.

CLASS 3A

Alton’s Yaveion Freeman lost his match against Antonio Alvarado 11-4 in the 145-pound class. Freeman will wrestler Friday in the wrestlebacks against Austin Martin of DeKalb.

Edwardsville advanced two wrestlers to the quarterfinals when Ryan Richie won his 113-pound match against Luis Flores in a close match 5-4. He will wrestle Friday morning. Also from Edwardsville Drew Landau had a 5-4 decision when he beat Jake Crandall. He also will wrestle Friday morning.
