Marquette Girls Track Team Takes First At EAWR Invite, EAWR Takes Second

WOOD RIVER – East Alton Wood River High School hosted the 2023 East Alton Wood River Track Invitational Saturday on a beautiful day. 14 girls teams and 14 boys teams competed in the meet. Alton Marquette girls track team led the meet on the girl’s side with 98 points followed by the host team EAWR with 90 points and Freeburg came in at 86 points.

In the girl’s high jump Marquette’s Grace Sechrest finished 1st with a mark of 1.47m. In the women’s long jump Sammy Hentrich of Marquette finished with a jump of 4.82m which was good enough for a second-place finish followed by her teammate Sechrest with jump of 4.55 for third place. In the triple jump Sechrest placed third with a jump of 9.38m.

In girls shot put Abby Flowers of Carrolton came away with the win with a throw of 9.49m followed by two EAWR throwers Milla Legette took second with a throw of 9.24 and Kennadi Suttles took third with a throw of 8.40m. Marquette’s Alecia McCulley placed eleventh with a throw of 6.47. EAWR Milla Legette placed first in the discus with a throw of 28.22m. Kennadi Suttles placed sixth with a throw of 17.52. McCulley finished tenth for Marquette.

In the 4×800 the Marquette girls team won with a time of 12:19. EAWR came in fourth with a time of 14:44. In the 4×100 Madison took the first-place finish with a time of 52:47. EAWR placed fourth with a time of 55:19 and Alton Marquette finished in sixth place with a time of 59:58.

In the 3200-meter race Isabella Hacker of Breese Mater Dei won by over a two-minute margin she finished at 12:39 second place was Paige Rister of Marquette she finished at 14:02. In the 100m hurdles EAWR took first and second in the race. Gina Truax finished with a time of 17:39 and Mary Nguyen finished with a time of 20:85.

In the 100-meter race EAWR’s Jessica Brown took first with a time of 13:35. Hentrich took third from Marquette, 13:57 while Sechrest finished sixth with a time of 14.26 and EAWR’s Taylor Minner finished eleventh with a time of 14:68. In the 800m Isabell Downey of Marquette finished eighth with a time of 3:16.

In the 4×200 EAWR finished fourth with a time of 2:02 and Marquette was right behind them with a time of 2:05 to place fifth. The 400-meter run Cassie Eccles of Marquette placed seventh with a time of 1:18.

In the 300m hurdles Truax swept the hurdles with another first-place finish. She finished with a time of 51.55 followed by Hentrich with a time of 54:65. Marquette Katie Johnson took second in the 1600m race with a time of 6:32. In the 200m Hentrich took first with a finish of 27.88. Brown of EAWR finished third with a time of 28.79.

In the final race of the day the 4×400 Marquette finished in fourth place with a time of 5:08 and EAWR finished in fifth place with a time of 5:16.
