ALTON – An Alton police officer that was driving by the 3400 of College Ave noticed smoke coming from Tycon Builders Tuesday night.
When firefighters arrived on scene, they were met with heavy smoke coming from all sides of the building. Due to the building layout firefighters had a hard time getting the fire under control. It took about an hour to get the main fire out. The building suffered serious damage.
A box-alarm was requested which East Alton Fire Department responded with the ladder truck. Rosewood Heights manned East Alton Station while they helped Alton.
Alton Fire Department had three back-to-back calls within a ten-minute period. Before the fire Alton responded to the Berm Highway at Cpl Belchick Expy for a traffic crash with entrapment. Arch Medical Helicopter was called and transported one to a St Louis Hospital. Then as the Tycon building fire was called in a house fire on Oakwood Ave was called in. Godfrey responded to that scene and handled it for Alton since they were battling this fire.
No injuries were reported at the Tycon Building Fire. It is unknown what caused the fire. There was no information about the Oakwood fire at this time.
