ROXANA – The Roxana Shells football team is getting ready for a big home game conference matchup Friday night against the Breese Central Cougars.
The crowd will be big for this game and the Shells will be throwing a tailgate party before the game.
The Shells are coming into this game with a 6-0 record and a 3-0 conference record. The Cougars come into this matchup with a 5-1 overall record and a 3-0 conference record. The Cougars loss came to Highland in week 1.
The Shells love to run the ball and the stats show. They have 2160 rushing yards so far this season. Three players have over 400 yards on the ground. Terrel Graves with 474 yards, Andruw Ellis with 616 yards, and Evan Wells with 755 yards. Wells leads the team with 12 rushing touchdowns followed by Ellis with 9 and Graves with 7.
Chris Walleck leads the Shells at quarterback. Walleck has passed for 429 yards for 6 passing touchdowns. He has also rushed for 35 yards. Aidan Briggs leads the Shells in catching. He has caught for 215 yards with 2 touchdowns. Kael Hester has caught 144 yards for 3 touchdowns.
On the defense side, Nick Newton leads the Shells in solo tackles with 32. James Herring with 27, Braden Johnson with 23, Zeb Katzmarek with 21, and Mason Forsythe with 16. Wells leads the team with 4 sacks.
The Shells have outscored their opponents 267-61.
The Shells are ranked 5th in The Associated Press Class 3A state poll. Whoever wins this game will at least share the Cahokia Conference championship.
Last year the Shells qualified for the playoffs and they went on the road in the first road to play the Hillsboro Hilltoppers. The Shells were able to leave Hillsboro with a 13-7 win to advance to the second round.
In the second round, they played a really good Prairie Central team. The Shells lost 41-20 to end the season.
