Michael Scannell

Michael Wayne Scannell, 62, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 11:50 p.m. on Sunday, November 12, 2023, at Missouri Baptist Medical Center in Town and Country, Missouri.  He was born January 17, 1961, in East St. Louis, Illinois, a son of Wayne Michael and Jeanette (Lubak) Scannell of Granite City.  Michael married the love of his life, Susie L. (Edwards) Scannell on October 19, 1985, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Granite City and she survives.  He retired in August 2023, from Evoqua Water Technologies in Granite City after over 30 years of dedicated service as a service technician.  He also owned and operated Recoil Armory and was a proud member of the National Rifle Association.  He was a talented musician throughout his life and enjoyed playing the drums in The Casuals Band with his dad, son and nephew.  He was a dedicated member and President of the Metro East Musicians Union, AFM, Local 29-717.  He enjoyed being a hockey coach with the Granite City Steelers and Warriors for several years.  He was a member of St. Francis de Sales Oratory in St. Louis and a longtime member of St. Mary & St. Margaret Catholic Church and also Holy Family Catholic Church in Granite City.  He was an avid outdoorsman, loved being at his lake property, Uncle Walt’s Place, in Farmington, Missouri and enjoyed his days of his razor riding, camping, hunting and fishing.  Michael never met a stranger, remembered by all who knew him, cherished special times with his family and truly adored his grandchildren.  In addition to his beloved wife of 38 years, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Annie Scannell of Troy and Patrick and Taylor Scannell of Maryville; four grandchildren, Mikey, Leo, Carlee and Jameson; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Janet and Jim Kopsic of Granite City, Lisa and Brian Blackwell of Granite City, Juli and Alec Nemeth of Glen Carbon and Susan and Carl Keef of Granite City; mother-in-law, Arlene Edwards of Granite City; two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Cindy Edwards of Florida and Julie and Jeff Daugherty of Staunton; nieces; nephews; other extended family and many dear friends.  He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Leo and Alvina Scannell and Steve and Helen Lubak; father-in-law, Russell Edwards and a brother-in-law, Russell Edwards.  In celebration of his life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Monday, November 20, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.  Visitation will continue at St. Mary and St. Mary-St. Mark Catholic Church in Madison on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. until time of a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. with Father Steve Thompson as celebrant.  Burial will follow at Calvary Catholic Church in Edwardsville.  Memorials may be made to The Backstoppers, Inc. 10411 Clayton Road #203, St. Louis, MO 63131 and may be accepted at www.backstopper.org or accepted at the funeral chapel.  www.irwinchapel.com
