Florence G. Spurgeon, age 93 of Highland, IL, died Sunday, December 17, 2023, at Cedarhurst of Highland in Highland, IL.
She was born on Thursday, October 2, 1930, in Steeleville, IL, the daughter of Everett and Thelma (nee Pressley) Sternberg.
On Monday, June 20, 1949, she married Charles Hadden Spurgeon, Jr. at Chester, Illinois, who passed away on Monday, December 17, 1962.
Florence was born in Steeleville, IL and grew up in Chester, IL. She graduated from Chester High School in 1948. She had worked at Blue Parrot Restaurant for her future in-laws and that is where she met Charles. They made their home in Centerville, IL and then moved to Highland in 1961. They raised their family in Highland, IL. She waitressed at several local restaurants, with the last being, Michael’s Restaurant in 1974. She became a licensed lab technician and worked at several doctor’s offices, and hospitals, including Anderson Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital until retiring in 1990’s. She enjoyed reading books and doing crossword puzzles. She was a accomplished seamstress. She liked to attend her grandchildren’s activities and sporting events. She also enjoyed attending productions at the Muny and Fox Theaters. She has traveled throughout the United States.
Survivors include: daughters – Barbara L. (John) Russell, Lebanon, TN and Charla J. (Cornell) Meyer, Highland, IL; daughter-in-law – Sandra Spurgeon, Olney, IL; grandchildren – Michael C. (Emily) Russell, Jamie L. (Brian) Kai, David A. (Shannon) Meyer, Elaine C. Russell (Husband Michael Molinaro) and Caitlin J. (Matthew) Schnell; great grandchildren – Penny Russell, Juliet Russell, Liam Kai, Aiden Kai, Cameron Meyer, Jude Meyer, Eva Schnell, Clara Schnell and Otto Schnell; sister – Carol Bryant, South Fulton, TN and brother – Walter Sternberg, Omaha, NE.
She was preceded in death by: parents Everett J. and Thelma G. (nee Pressley) Sternberg; husband – Charles Hadden Spurgeon, Jr; son – Roger A. Spurgeon; brothers – Paul Sternberg, Kenneth Sternberg and Edward Sternberg; sisters – Nelda Harris and Lela E. Sternberg; father-in-law – Charles H. Spurgeon, Sr.; mother-in-law – Elvira Schopfer and step father-in-law – Harold Schopfer
Arrangements are being handled by Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, IL.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Thursday, December 28, 2023, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, IL.
Funeral Service will be at 11:00 AM on Thursday, December 28, 2023, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, IL.
Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Chester, IL on December 28, 2023 at 3:00 PM.
