WOOD RIVER – The Wood River Fire Department responded to the 800 block of State Street just after 5:00 a.m. Wednesday morning for a structure fire.
When firefighters arrived they encouraged heavy smoke and fire coming from the front of the house. Due to the fire, a box alarm was requested. East Alton, Roxana, Rosewood Heights, and Edwardsville Fire Departments responded.

A neighbor told firefighters an elderly person lived there. Firefighters located the person deceased inside the house.
Madison County Emergency Management also responded with their rehab unit.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and will be under investigation. No other injuries were reported.
