Janet DeGonia

Janet M. DeGonia, 81, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 6:49 p.m. on Tuesday, 30, 2024, at LaBella of Edwardsville. 

She was born August 30, 1942, in Granite City, a daughter of the late Harvey and Pearl (Wehling) Heaton. 

She married the love of her life, David L. DeGonia on March 30, 1960, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granite City and he survives. 

Janet was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who cherished the special times shared with family and friends. She was a devoted member of Holy Family Catholic Church and helped many years with the funeral luncheon committee.  She enjoyed her days of bowling, watching sports, activities with the Red Hat Ladies and watching and feeding the birds. 

In addition to her beloved husband of over 63 years, she is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Rhonda DeGonia of Granite City, Donald and Joelle DeGonia of Glen Carbon and David and Erica DeGonia of Granite City; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Miriam and Delshon Matkins, Matthew and Virginia DeGonia, Mason and Lauren Rutter, Morgan DeGonia, Marc DeGonia, Zack DeGonia, Zane DeGonia, Ryan DeGonia and Jennifer and Curtis Flake; eight great grandchildren; two sisters, Lorene Christ of Collinsville and Virginia Thomas of Troy and a brother, Herbert Heaton of Bunker Hill; many nieces; nephews; other extended family and friends. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Mark Christopher DeGonia; a grandson, Marshall DeGonia; a granddaughter, Michaela DeGonia; three sisters, Thelma Cuvar, Ilene Edwards and Dorothy White and four brothers, Albert Heaton, Jerry Heaton, Lawrence Heaton and Elmer Heaton. 

In celebration of her life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Sunday, February 4, 2024, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. 

A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church in Granite City at 10 a.m. on Monday, February 5, 2024. 

Burial will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville. 

Memorials may be made to Vitas Hospice, Holy Family School or to Masses and may be accepted at the funeral chapel.
