CHAMPAIGN – It was a mixed results day for area wrestlers on the first day of the IHSA State Wrestling tournament in Champaign. The tournament runs through Saturday.
In Class 1A in the 113-weight class Carlyle’s Preston Waughtel won by tech-fall with a 15-0 win over Colton Stone of Sandwich. Preston got his second win of the day after he won by a major decision 15-2 over Anthony Alanis.
In the 120-weight class, Carlyle’s Tyson Waughtel beat Blake Arseneau of McNamara with a pinfall at 1:10. Tyson then followed his brother’s win and got a tech-fall 17-2 over Dean Wainwright (Riverdale).
In the 126-pound class Logan Riggs (Roxana) lost to Brody Widlowski (Coal City) by pinfall at 3:40 Riggs will be back Friday in the second round of wrestlebacks.
Brandon Green Jr (Roxana) faced off against Shawn Schlickman (GCMS) in the 132-pound class and pinned Schlickman in 26 seconds. In his second match of the day he dropped a 6-2 decision to Vance Williams.
In the 150-pound class Braden Johnson (Roxana) lost to Chasen Kazmierczak (Wheaton Academy) 10-3. Johnson will wrestle Friday in the second round of the wrestlebacks.
In the 157-pound class Lyndon Thies (Roxana) lost a close 4-2 decision to Daniel Kelly. Thies will wrestle Friday in the second round of the wrestlebacks.
James Herring won quickly after he pinned William Anderson (Galena) in 40 seconds. In his second match, he beat Nicholas Armour by pinfall at 3:39. Herring is 2-0 for the day.
EAWR Drake Champlin went 2-0 on his first day. He won his first match of the tournament after he pinned Michael Haas at 5:40. In his second match he won 3-1 in overtime. He had a takedown with a few seconds left in overtime to win. He beat Jacob Bischoff (LeRoy)
