Penelope Faith “Penny” (Meyer) Slaughter, 82, of Granite City, Illinois, passed away on March 2, 2024, in Edwardsville, Illinois. She was born March 31, 1941, in East St. Louis, Illinois to the late Dorothy (McLester) Meyer and Merle Edgar Thrash.Penny’s life was a tapestry of service, faith, and love. As a Case Manager/Homemaker with the Illinois Department of Children & Family Services, she wove threads of hope and guidance for young mothers in need. She attached her heart to the First United Pentecostal Church of Granite City, where she worshipped for three decades under the direction of Rev. Kenneth Reeves. She later found a new spiritual home at the Truth Tabernacle Church, also in Granite City. Penny expressed her creativity and joy through crocheting, needle point, art, and drawing. She immersed herself in the Word of God and shared its wisdom and beauty with others. She was a woman of keen intellect and gentle compassion who treasured her family above all. Her absence will truly be felt by all who knew and loved her.She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Gene L. Meyer, John “Sonny” Meyer, and Donald V. Meyer; her sisters, Joyce Palsenberger, Mary Jane Hayden, Janet Orrell and Gwendolyn “Tiny” Gnaegy.Surviving to cherish her memory are her children, Allen “Troy” (Tammy) Walker, of Granite City, Illinois, Forrest (Barb) Mifflin, of Edwardsville, Illinois, Mike (Kathy) Mifflin, of Collinsville, Illinois, Bobby (Deanna) Mifflin, of Granite City, Illinois, Kristine Rivera, of Granite City, Illinois, and Christopher Rivera, of Youngstown, Ohio; her 14 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.Memorials are appreciated to the Truth Tabernacle Church or to the family.
