Glendon Mathis

Glendon Ray Mathis, age 88, of Granite City, IL, passed away on Saturday, March 16, 2024. Glendon was born on August 13, 1935, in Dover, TN, a son of the late James Walter Mathis Jr. and Cynthia Ray (Taylor) Mathis.

Glendon was a United States Army veteran who proudly served as a paratrooper and medic with the 101st Airborne Division “Screaming Eagles”. On March 26, 1960, Glendon married Betty Jean Hendricks, the love of his life in Madison, IL, and Betty passed away on January 4, 2009. He was a faithful member of Nameoki United Methodist Church in Granite City, IL. Glendon retired from Granite City Steel, BOF department after thirty-eight years of dedicated service. He was the owner of Mathis Construction in Granite City, IL. Over the years Glendon and his sons built many homes throughout the area. Glendon was a self-taught contractor who could build, fix, or repair anything he put his mind to. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, whom he loved dearly. Glendon will be remembered as a hard-working family man who never met a stranger. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Glendon will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his parents and wife, Glendon was preceded in death by two grandchildren; sister, Annie Yarbrough; and by two brothers, J.W. Mathis and Luther Mathis.

He is survived by his loving children, Debra (Gary) Shrum, David Mathis and Richard Mathis all of Granite City, IL; dear siblings, Ollie Bryant, Larry (Marie) Mathis, and Roland (Sandy) Mathis all of Dover, TN; sister-in-law, Jean Mathis of Dover, TN; proud grandfather to five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; extended family and friends.

In celebration of his life, a visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at Irwin Chapel, Granite City, IL. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, with Pastor Susan Harrison officiating. Glendon will be laid to rest next to Betty at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates, Glen Carbon, IL.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Nameoki United Methodist Church. Donations will be accepted at the funeral chapel.
