Horst O. Quante, a beloved member of the Granite City, IL community, passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2024, at the age of 91. Horst was born on September 9, 1932, in Ober-Ramstadt, Germany, to the late Franz and Elfriede (Franka) Quante.
Horst found the love of his life in Kay Reinhardt, whom he married on April 4, 1964, at St. John United Church of Christ in Granite City, IL. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership.
Serving his adopted country with honor, Horst was discharged from the United States Army in June 1955. He dedicated several decades of his life to Granite City Steel, retiring in 1994 after years of diligent service.
Horst had a zest for life and found joy in various activities, including playing Chinese checkers, chess, pool, soccer, and golf. However, his greatest source of happiness came from spending cherished moments with his family, especially his daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchild.
In addition to his wife and parents, Horst was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Carolyn Hammann of Florissant Mo; and siblings Maria Kampe, Elsie Unger, Heinz Quante, and Alfred Quante. He leaves behind a legacy of love and warmth, deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Horst is survived by his loving daughter, Maria (Joe) Smith of Troy, IL; two dear grandchildren, Nicholas Smith and Rachael Hammann; adored great-grandchild Penelope Smith; nephews Thomas Kampe, Juergen Kampe, Gerhard Kampe, Hans Jurgen and numerous dear friends and extended family members.
During this time of mourning, let us remember Horst’s vibrant spirit, his unwavering love for his family, and the countless memories he created. May he rest in eternal peace.
A Celebration of Life will be held on May 18, 2024 at 10:00 am at St. John Church, 2901 Nameoki Road, Granite City, IL 62040.
