John R. Hamm, 90, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 11:39 p.m. on Friday, May 10, 2024, at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City. He was born December 29, 1933, in Dover, Tennessee, a son of the late Joseph and Myrtle (Anglin) Hamm.
He married JoAnn (Sullivan) Hamm on May 7, 1958 and she passed away December 19, 2011. He retired in 1984 from Granite City Steel after 33 years of dedicated service as a steelworker. The United States Navy veteran proudly served his country and was a member of the Shriner’s and the Granite City Masonic Lodge. He was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and enjoyed his days of fishing and will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Mary Hamm of Highland; a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and John Monroe of Granite City; four grandchildren and spouses, Chris and Holly Stephens of Granite City, Tim Swyear of Granite City, Robert and Natalie Hamm Jr. of Maryville and Sara and David Giger of Marine; five great grandchildren, Rowan, Rori, Easton, Tony and Dean; a sister, Flora Buckingham of Granite City; a brother and sister-in-law, Terry and Debbie Hamm of Granite City; many nieces; nephews; other extended family and friends.
In addition to his beloved wife of 53 years and parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Stephens and two sisters, Hattie Michaels and JoAnn Hamm.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Thursday, May 16, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Phil Warren officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon.
