Donald Eugene Thompson, 88, of Granite City, Illinois passed away and was reunited with his beloved wife, Evelyn at 9:20 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, 2024, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville. He was born May 25, 1936, in Fieldon, Illinois, a son of the late Logan H. and Viola (Dunn) Thompson. He married the love of his life, Evelyn Marie (Miller) Thompson on June 24, 1961, in South Roxana, Illinois and she passed away April 6, 2024. Don was retired from Spectralite after many years of dedicated service with the Sheet Metal Workers Local. He proudly served his country with the United States Army. Don was a faithful member of Grace Baptist Church in Granite City, Illinois, serving many years as a Sunday school teacher, trustee and an usher. He was a longtime member of the Granite City Masonic Triple Lodge and was a past commander of the Shriner’s. He enjoyed his days of fishing, hunting and gardening and will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Lynn and Beth Jones of Moro; a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Chris Hillmer of Granite City; seven grandchildren, Chris Morgan, Jason Morgan, Rachel (Jeffrey) Woodson, Leah (Jon) Sanchez, Eric Jones, Lauren (Kyle) Ulaszek and Lindsey Hillmer; several great grandchildren; a great-great grandson; a sister, Mary Brakefield; nieces; nephews; other extended family and friends. In addition to his beloved wife of 63 years and parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Morgan; grandson, Brian Morgan; stepmother, Jewell (Bishop) Thompson and siblings, Truman Thompson, Russell Thompson, Raymond Thompson, James Thompson, Pete Thompson and Cecille Dunn.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Friday, August 2, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. until time of a Masonic service at 12:00 noon followed by a funeral service at 12:15 p.m. with Daniel Wilson officiating. Military honors will follow services. He will be laid to rest at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.
