George Burris

George C. Burris, 96, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 5:40 p.m. on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City.  He was born August 1, 1928, in Winona, Missouri, a son of the late Luey and Ola (Bolton) Burris.  He married Betty L. (Rice) Burris on August 27, 1949, and she passed away on November 30, 1995.  He later married Florence L. “Flo” (Coggins) Burris on March 9, 1996, and she survives.  He retired in 1987 from Granite City Steel after 38 years of dedicated service as a pipefitter.  He had a love for old time country music and enjoyed singing and playing the guitar.  He enjoyed karaoke and his days of camping and fishing.  He looked forward to breakfast, lunch and dinner with family and friends and never missed his dessert.  He cherished his family and will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends.  In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Tammy Burris of Highland, Daniel and Anita Burris of Blue Mound, Illinois, Alan and Rhonda Burris of Ocala, Florida and Tim and Debbie Burris of Salem, Illinois; a sister, Emma Brown of Alton; eleven grandchildren, Steve, Rachel, Katie, Geoff, Jerrod, Leah, Seth, Josh, Caleb, Peggy and Jenna; many great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; other extended family and friends.  In addition to his first wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a stepson, Robert Paul Moore; a grandson, Brett; two sisters, Lena Jones and Pearl Pickens and five brothers, Bill, Lloyd, Merle, Everett and Roy Burris.  In celebration of his life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 12:00 noon with Reverend Sharon Autenrieth officiating.  Burial will follow at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon.  Memorials may be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Children or to St. Jude Children’s Hospital and may be accepted at the funeral chapel.  www.irwinchapel.com
