Raymond “Ray” Heinzl, age 80, of Belleville, IL, passed away peacefully on November 29, 2024. Ray was born on October 8, 1944, to the late Joseph and Edna Heinzl. A man of unwavering faith, service, and family devotion, he touched countless lives through his kindness, generosity, and steadfast love.
Ray was the beloved husband of Mary “Jo Ann” Heinzl (nee Aubuchon), with whom he shared 59 wonderful years of marriage, having wed on May 1, 1965. Together, they built a legacy of love and commitment that will endure in the hearts of their family.
Ray was the cherished father of Jeff (Dr. Karen VanAnrooy) Heinzl, the late Dr. Catherine (Tom) Speedie, Steven (Jennifer) Heinzl, Suzanne (Marshall) Mullins, and Christopher (Erin O’Halloran) Aubuchon. He was the proud and loving grandfather of Graham Speedie, Emma Heinzl, Nolan Heinzl, Nora Mullins, Elaina Mullins, Olive Aubuchon, and Orry Aubuchon.
He is also survived by his dear brother, Chuck (Barb) Heinzl, and was preceded in death by his siblings, Joe (Sharon) Heinzl and Rose Marie Heinzl. Ray leaves behind numerous beloved nieces and nephews, who will fondly remember his warmth and humor.
Ray was a lifelong Scouter, earning the rank of Eagle Scout in 1961 and dedicating much of his life to the Boy Scouts of America. His leadership, mentorship, and dedication inspired generations of Scouts, and he remained an active supporter of the organization throughout his life.
Ray was also a devoted member of his church, serving as a parishioner of St. Martin of Tours and later Our Lady Queen of Peace. He was always ready to lend a helping hand around the parish, and his love of music was evident as a member of the church choir.
After 39½ years of dedicated service, Ray retired from Granite City Steel, where he was known for his strong work ethic and camaraderie with colleagues.
Ray’s life was a testament to service, faith, and love for his family and community. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Boy Scouts of America or to Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 5, 2024, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Kassly Mortuary, Ltd., Fairview Heights, IL.
A funeral procession will leave Kassly Mortuary, Ltd., Fairview Heights, IL at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, December 6, 2024, for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Belleville, IL, with Fr. Godfrey Mullen O.S.B. officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Belleville, IL.
