Darwin Wiess

Darwin Dale Wiess, age 87, of Highland, IL, died Friday, February 14, 2025, at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis, MO.He was born on February 14, 1938, in Highland, IL, the son of Ralph W. Wiess and Vera Lydia Wiess (nee Kueker). Darwin married Margo (nee Moss) on October 26, 1963, at St. Paul Catholic Church in Highland, IL.Mr. Wiess grew up in Troy, IL, before moving to Highland, IL. He graduated Highland High School in 1955. He then attended SIU-C, graduating in 1960 with a degree in Journalism, as well as being a member of Theta Chi Fraternity. He went to work for a newspaper in Rockford, IL before volunteering for military service. Upon his return to Highland, Darwin worked for the St. Louis Globe Democrat, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and ultimately retiring from Missouri Athletic Club.Mr. Wiess and Ron Jacober owned WINU radio station for several years. He enjoyed golfing (he got a ‘hole-in-one’ on hole 5), fishing, and watching his grandson play baseball. He loved cooking Italian food and working in his yard.Survivors include: Wife: Margo  C. Wiess (nee Moss), Son – Timothy E. (Amy D.) Wiess, M.D. of Munster, IN, Daughter – Elizabeth Ann (Mark) Reinders of Edwardsville, IL, Son – Ryan C. Wiess of Greenville, IL, Grandchildren: Jessica C. Wiess, Timothy Joseph “TJ” (Amber) Wiess, D.O., Hailey E. (Collin) Adams, and Jacob K. Reinders; Brother – Gary W. (Deborah) Wiess and  Sister – Janice K. Draper.He was preceded in death by: Father – Ralph W. Wiess (died 8/26/1982), Mother – Vera Lydia Wiess (nee Kueker) (died 10/5/1999), and Brother-In-Law – Alan C. Draper (died 6/12/2011).Arrangements are being handled by Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, IL.Visitation will be Friday, February 28, 2025, at Saint Paul Catholic Church from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM. Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 AM on Friday, February 28, 2025, at Saint Paul Catholic Church in Highland, IL, with Rev. Fr. Pat G. Jakel, Pastor, officiating. Intermit will be at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Highland, IL.Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Catholic Church, Masses, or Brauns Terrace (Ryan’s group home in Greenville, IL).
