Melvin John Maier, 87, of Mulberry, passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2025 at Mulberry Health, IN. He was born on August 1, 1937 in Jefferson City, Missouri to the late Henry and Edna (Max) Maier.
After graduating from Granite City Senior High School, Melvin enlisted in the United States Army. Following his honorable discharge, he worked for 42 years as a steelworker. He was married to Shurnette (Grigsby) on December 21, 1963 in Granite City IL, and she survives.
Melvin and Shurnette were members of St. John United Church of Christ in Granite City, IL for 35+ years before moving to Lafayette, IN where they joined Faith Baptist Church. Melvin also belonged to the Shriner’s society. He was a very family-oriented man. He enjoyed riding his bicycle, family barbecues, rooting on his kids/grandkids in their multiple activities, and taking his motorhome with Shurnette and friends down to Texas.
In addition to his wife, Shurnette Maier, Melvin is survived by his son, Michael (Kimi) Maier; sister, Carole (Jack) Nauert; brothers, Russ (Jane) Maier and Wayne (Pat) Maier ; grandchildren, Mason (Alex) Maier, Kali (Jake) McCaw, Sydney Maier, Luke Woodman, and Emma Woodman; and great grandchildren, Mills Maier and Tripp Maier.
In addition to his parents, Melvin was preceded in death by a daughter, Linnette (Darrell) Woodman and brother George (Sharon) Maier.
Visitation will be held at Hippensteel Funeral Home on Sunday, March 9th from 1 to 2 p.m., Service to begin at 2:00 p.m. Melvin will be laid to rest at Sunset Hill Cemetery in Carbon City, Illinois at a later date.
