Roy Hinderliter

Roy W. Hinderliter, 77, of Swansea IL, born July 12, 1947, in Indianapolis, IN, passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 4, 2025, at his winter home in Mesa, Arizona, surrounded by family.

Roy served two years with the U. S. Army in Vietnam and 20 years with the U. S. Coast Guard. He retired in 1990 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer. He also owned and operated Hometown Realty in Maryville, IL. He enjoyed deep sea fishing, scuba diving, golfing, and working with the alumni of Harry E. Wood High School, Indianapolis, IN, where he was the captain and quarterback of the football team, captain of the golf team, Homecoming King, and founder and organizer of their annual class reunions. Roy graduated from Wood High School in 1966.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Perno Esco and Loretta May (Foster) Hinderliter; his sister Bonnie Adkins, her husband Glenn Adkins and their son Herbert Adkins; his nephew-in-law James Mitchell; his father-in-law and mother-in-law Marion (Betty) Stamps; and his brothers-in-law Joseph and Gregory Stamps.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Charlotte M. (Stamps) Hinderliter, whom he married on May 20, 1977, in St. Louis, MO; their son Jon (Iris) Hinderliter and their grandson Meyer Hinderliter, all of Belleville, IL; his brother Virgil (Cheryl) Hinderliter and their children Shannon and Shane all of Indianapolis, IN; his niece Tonya of Seffner, FL; his sister-in-law Brenda (Stamps) Boyd of Swansea, IL; his brother-in-law Stephen (Dolly Wood) Stamps of Edwardsville, IL; his lifelong best friend George Diggs of Indianapolis, IN; the Lunsford and Diggs families; the alumni of Wood High School, Indianapolis, IN; as well as nieces and nephews and extended family, business associates and friends.

Memorial donations are suggested to Hospice (www.hospicefoundation.org) and USCG Chief Petty Officers Association (www.uscgcpoa.org).

Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 20, 2025, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m at Kassly Funeral Home, Fairview Heights, IL. In celebration of Roy’s life, services will be held on Friday, March 21, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Pastor Ian Stamps of Broadway Christian Church, Mattoon, IL, the family’s nephew, will officiate the services.

Burial will follow with full military honors at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, MO.
