Robert Allen McElroy, 75, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 2:29 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at John Cochran V.A. Medical Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
He was born December 5, 1949, in St. Louis, Missouri, a son of the late John Allen and Dorothy M. (Hudgins) McElroy.
He married the love of his life, Melody Jean (Pasley) McElroy on February 21, 1969, in Mitchell, Illinois and she survives.
Robert retired in 2012 from Granite City Steel after 42 years of dedicated service as a millwright. The United States Army veteran proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. He was a fan of NASCAR and enjoyed RC car racing and slot cars. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, had a love for all his pets through the years and cherished his family and friends. He enjoyed his many Florida trips with family and friends, walking on the beach and showing everyone a great time.
In addition to his beloved wife of 56 years, he is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Rebecca and Darrin Nichols of Marthasville, Missouri and Angie and Danial Kunst of Granite City; a son, Nathan McElroy of Granite City; five grandchildren, Zachary, Ashlyn, Brendan, Jaxon and Mia; his sister, Martha “Marty” Jarnagin of Granite City; other extended family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ellen McElroy; niece, Michelle Jarnagin and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Cedric Guy and Shirley Pasley.
In celebration of his life, a service and military honors will be held at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, with Father Steve Thompson officiating. A procession will be leaving Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City at 10:15 a.m. for those wishing to join.
