June Bernaix

June Marie Bernaix, age 79, of Granite City, IL, passed away on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO.

June was born on June 1, 1945, in St. Louis, MO, a daughter of the late Everett Chastain Sr. and Gertrude (Kuelker) Chastain.

June will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. June graduated from Granite City High School in 1963.

On May 16, 1964, June Chastain married Charles Bernaix, the love of her life in Granite City, IL. June was a faithful member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Granite City, IL.

She retired from Granite City Library after many years of dedicated service, and June and Charles owned and operated Dairy Queen in Pontoon Beach, IL, for eight years. She enjoyed bowling and camping. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, whom she loved dearly. June will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

In addition to her parents, June was preceded in death by a sister, Gertrude Peters and by a brother, Everett Chastain Jr.

She is survived by her devoted husband of sixty years, Charles Bernaix of Granite City, IL, loving children, Darren (Michelle) Bernaix, Maria (Brian) Decker and Matthew Bernaix, dear siblings, Harold Chastain, Evelyn Hotson, and Kathleen Debost; proud grandmother to Nicole (Bobby) Simpson, Alyssa (Derek) Ross and Madison Chammess; proud great-grandmother to Kaylee Simpson, Maverick Simpson, Cole Simpson, Harper Williams and Hadley Ross, many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

In celebration of her life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Saturday, April 19, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. until time of a funeral service at 12:00 noon with Pastor Charley Johnson officiating.

Interment will be in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Edwardsville, IL. at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.

Memorial donations may be given to BackStoppers. Donations will be accepted at the funeral chapel.
