MARYVILLE – A newly constructed roundabout at the intersection of Illinois Route 162 and Keebler Road opened to traffic on April 9, 2026, in Maryville, Illinois, following more than a decade of planning that local and state leaders pursued after a fatal crash at the site.
The Village of Maryville announced the opening, saying the project was developed in collaboration with the Illinois Department of Transportation, neighboring communities, Juneau Associates, Inc., P.C., Engineering Firm, and other stakeholders.
The initiative began after the July 31, 2015, crash that involved Abigail “Abby” McElroy, according to the village. A memorial plaque has been installed at the roundabout in her honor.
The plaque for Abby McElroy reads: “At this place, a vibrant life was taken too soon. Abby brought joy, laughter, and light to all who knew her. This marker stands not only in remembrance, but as a reminder to cherish every moment and one another. Forever loved. Forever missed.”
Maryville Mayor Wayne White said the roundabout is intended to improve safety and traffic flow at one of the community’s busiest intersections.
“Today represents not only the completion of a major infrastructure project, but also a meaningful step forward in our ongoing mission to protect the lives of our residents and visitors,” White said. “This roundabout stands as a lasting tribute to Abby McElroy and reflects what can be accomplished when communities come together with a shared purpose.”
In earlier remarks about the intersection, White said it had “horrible traffic congestion” and had been the site of a fatal car accident.
The village said the roundabout is designed to enhance roadway safety by reducing vehicle speeds and minimizing the risk of severe collisions, while also easing congestion and improving overall traffic efficiency.
Keebler Road is also undergoing a resurfacing project that is in its third phase and is funded completely by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
