MILLSTADT – Millstadt Ambulance Service said a motor vehicle crash with injuries and reported entrapment near Illinois Route 15 and South 11th Street in Millstadt injured nine people Sunday evening, Aug. 2, 2026, prompting a mass casualty response that sent multiple agencies to the scene.
The ambulance service said the crash occurred around 8 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2026, near the intersection of Route 15 and South 11th Street. It reported that the incident involved at least two vehicles and that nine people, including several minors, were hospitalized with various injuries. No deaths had been reported as of Monday morning.
The Millstadt Ambulance Service said that at 8:36 a.m. Sunday, Millstadt EMS and MedStar EMS were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident with injuries and reported entrapment. The post said both agencies were sent because the crash occurred near the response boundary between Millstadt EMS and MedStar EMS and because initial reports indicated multiple injured and entrapped patients.
Based on the initial information, an ARCH Air Medical helicopter was placed on standby and later launched. After crews arrived and assessed the scene, the helicopter was canceled before landing.
“A total of four patients were transported to local hospitals by ground ambulances,” the post said.
Millstadt Ambulance Service said the incident was classified as a mass casualty incident because crews initially determined there were more people in need of assistance than available resources. The classification led officials to request additional EMS and police agencies from around the Metro East to assist with the response.
Responding agencies included Millstadt EMS, MedStar EMS, Hecker Fire Department, Smithton Fire Department, Smithton Police Department, New Athens Fire Department and the Illinois State Police, according to Millstadt Ambulance Service.
“There were no fatalities in this incident,” Millstadt Ambulance Service said.
Millstadt Ambulance Service thanked the responding agencies and the ARCH Air Medical flight crew in its statement.
“Incidents like this demonstrate the importance of strong mutual aid partnerships and seamless interagency cooperation,” the agency said. “The coordinated efforts of EMS, fire, law enforcement, and air medical resources helped ensure patients received timely care while maintaining the safety of everyone involved.”
“Our thoughts are with everyone involved in tonight’s incident, and we wish all the patients a full and speedy recovery,” the Millstadt Ambulance Service said in a statement.
