Bernita “Bernie” Haas, nee Karban, 90, of Belleville, IL, born February 10, 1936, in Paderborn, IL, passed away Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at home, surrounded by her loved ones.
Bernie met Richard “Shortlegs” Haas in 1972 and married in 1981.
Bernie was a one-of-a-kind woman who lived life to the fullest and left a lasting impression on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. Bernie loved spending weekends at the clubhouse on the Kaskaskia River surrounded by friends and family. She especially enjoyed cruising down the river, enjoying the water, the good times, and the company of the people she loved. She was a familiar and much-loved face behind the bar and served tables all her life. She worked at several establishments throughout the years, including Stoebers which became Bernie and Gene’s, Ol’timers Inn, Good Times, and Das Bierhaus just to name a few. She loved the nightlife, loved meeting people and was never afraid of hard work. Bernie loved to dance and was an amazing polka dancer and could always be counted on to enjoy the music and join in the fun. She had the zest for life and knew how to have a good time. Bernie was also a wonderful cook and true to Bernie’s nature there was always more than anyone could possibly eat.
Bernie will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and many people throughout the community whose lives she touched. Bernie lived life her way-with hard work, a generous heart, a love for people, and plenty of fun along the way. She leaves behind many wonderful memories that will continue to bring smiles and laughter for years to come.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Lena Schilling Karban; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Paul M. and Rita, nee Huth, Haas; and her brothers, Eugene Karban and Martin Karban.
She is survived by her loving husband, Richard Haas; her sister, Leona “Sis” Blaes; her brother-in-law, Ron Blaes; three sisters-in-law, Sr. Barbara A. Haas. SNND, Rita S. Ochoa, and Lisa (David) M. Hoffmann; and many nieces and nephews.
