
Ralph A. Hilmes, age 76, of Highland, passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at Highland Healthcare.
He was born on July 11, 1950, in Breese, IL, a son of the late Arnold, Sr. and Christine (nee Shleper) Hilmes. He grew up in Trenton and graduated from Mater Dei High School.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Mary Ann (Dennis) Brown, Raymond Hilmes, Al Hilmes and Irene Hilmes.
Ralph is survived by a brother, Arnold “Jay” Hilmes, Jr.; sister-in-law, Joyce Hilmes; great nieces and great nephews, Byron Hilmes, Shannon Hilmes, Brandon (Deb) Hilmes and Sharon (Steve) Ramsey.
Ralph is a dedicated community member and skilled group leader whose life is defined by service, hard work, and a love for good company. After a successful career at Basler Electric, where he guided his team with expertise as a Group Leader, Ralph retired in 2020 to enjoy a well-deserved next chapter. Throughout his life, Ralph has been deeply committed to his local community and fraternal organizations. His remarkable dedication is highlighted by his 47-year tenure as the treasurer for the Highland Coonhunters, a testament to his reliability and trusted leadership. He is also a charter member of the Trenton Sons of the American Legion and has maintained strong professional ties through his membership in Electrical Union 8840.When he is not volunteering or connecting with fellow members, Ralph can almost always be found at a card table. He is an avid card player who thrives on the strategy and camaraderie of a good game, with a particular fondness for euchre, pinochle, and gin rummy.
A Private Graveside Service will be held at St. Mary Cemetery in Trenton.
In lieu of flowers, plants, or other gifts, memorials may be made to Son of American Legion Post 778 or Highland Coonhunters (Youth) and will be received by mail at Moss Funeral Home, 535 N. 5th Street, Breese, IL 62230, who is serving the family.
