Illinois State Police Investigate Granite City Officer Involved Shooting

GRANITE CITY — Illinois State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting Monday, Aug. 24, 2026, in Granite City after local law enforcement officers responded to a report of an armed suspect, authorities said.

The Granite City Police Department and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office requested the Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 6 investigate the shooting, which occurred Aug. 24, 2026, in the 2000 block of Edison Avenue.

Authorities said GCPD and MCSO officers responded at approximately 10:19 a.m. Monday and observed the suspect armed with multiple weapons. The suspect did not comply with officers’ commands to drop the weapons, according to the release.

A Granite City police officer and a Madison County sheriff’s officer discharged firearms, striking the suspect. The suspect was transported to an area hospital in critical but stable condition. No officers were injured.

The investigation is open and ongoing. Upon completion, the case will be submitted to the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office for review. No additional information is available at this time.
