
GLEN CARBON – Will Rakers came up with a brace (two goals), and Tucker Sundberg also scored as Father McGivney Catholic won over Maquette Catholic 3-0 in a Gateway Metro Conference boys soccer match Thursday night at Father McGivney.
The Griffins did well in following up their big win Tuesday night at Belleville Althoff Catholic 1-0 Tuesday night at Althoff’s George Martz Field. It was the first-ever conference loss by the Crusaders in their brief history in the league.
All three of McGivney’s goals came off free kick situations, with Rakers scoring twice in the match, and Sundberg also scored off a free kick to give the Griffins the three points. Patrick Gierer had 10 saves in goal to record the clean sheet.
The Explorers are now 7-1-0, and next play against rival Alton Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. at Public School Stadium, then are at Belleville Althoff Catholic Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., then are at Columbia Sept. 16, also at 7:30 p.m.
The Griffins go to 3-2-0, and play Saturday afternoon at Highland in a 12 noon kickoff, then stay on the road on Tuesday and Wednesday, playing at Maryville Christian and Breese Mater Dei Catholic, respectively, the match against the Lions starting at 4:30 p.m., and the Mater Dei game starting at 6 p.m.
