BELLEVILLE — Mark Heffernan will lead the Belleville Police Department after the City Council approved Mayor Jenny Gain Meyer’s appointment of him as police chief, according to an announcement citing his experience and commitment to serving the community.
The council approved the appointment at a meeting this week.
“We look forward to working with him as he leads the Belleville Police Department and continues his dedication to serving our citizens,” the department said in a statement.
The appointment follows the death of previous Belleville Police Chief Matthew Eiskant, who died Aug. 24, 2026, at age 49 after a battle with cancer.
Eiskant served more than 25 years with the department, beginning as a patrol officer in June 2001. He rose through the ranks as a detective, sergeant, lieutenant, captain and assistant chief before being appointed chief in June 2022. A lifelong Belleville resident, Eiskant graduated from Belleville East High School in 1995.
In a separate staffing update, the Belleville Police Department said it had sworn in Officer Mooney as a lateral hire. The department welcomed Mooney and thanked him for choosing to serve Belleville.
