According to state police, Cerentano displayed a handgun while speaking with an officer on Aug. 24, refused to put it down, and fled in his vehicle.

At about 10:19 a.m. on Aug. 24, Granite City police and Madison County sheriff’s officers responded to the 2000 block of Edison Avenue. They found Cerentano on his roof with a handgun and a long gun, which was later confirmed to be a replica, state police said.

Cerentano indicated he had pulled the pin on a grenade and did not comply with officers’ commands to put down the weapons, according to state police.

As Cerentano waved a gun at officers, a Granite City police officer and a Madison County sheriff’s officer fired their weapons, striking him, state police said. Officers provided medical aid before Cerentano was taken to an area hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

State police gave Cerentano’s family an opportunity to review the video before its public release.

The agency said it will submit the case to the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office when the investigation is complete.
