Carol G. Hildebrand, 80 of Granite City, IL and formerly of Madison, IL passed away peacefully at Cedarhurst Senior Living in Edwardsville, IL on March 4, 2022.
Carol was born on July 14, 1941, in Granite City, IL; the daughter of the late Walter and Louise (Wallen) Cook of Madison, IL. Carol was a junior high school teacher for the Granite City School District from 1963 until her retirement in 1995. She was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Granite City and a member of the New Hope Chapter 432 order of the Eastern Star where she served as Worthy Matron in 1967. Carol was a member and a local leader of the Granite City Federation of Teachers Local 743. After retiring from teaching, Carol spent over a decade supporting the development of new teachers through her work with the Department of History at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.
In her free time, she enjoyed her days of taking care of her granddaughter, Mayleigh, and chasing around her two dachshunds. Her greatest love was her family. She will be remembered for her joy in Mayleigh, her caring for her son-in-law, and the strength and humor she showed in raising her children. Her favorite song to sing with Mayleigh was “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” She believed in helping others, showing patience and caring, and standing up against injustice wherever she found it.
Carol is survived by and will be missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Brett Alsop of Granite City, IL; son Regan Hildebrand of Granite City, IL, and her granddaughter, Mayleigh Alsop.
In addition to her parents, Carol was preceded in death in 1982 by her husband, Melvin Hildebrand, whom she married on May 22, 1970.
In celebration of Carol’s life, a private family service will be held at a later date where she will be laid to rest with her husband at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon.
Her family is grateful to the people at Cedarhurst of Edwardsville and, before that Cedarhurst of Collinsville, who cared for Carol these last few years.
