Alvin T. “Skeets” Barnes III

Alvin T. “Skeets” Barnes III, age 85, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 7:55 a.m. on Sunday, January 31, 2021 at Meridian Village in Glen Carbon.

He was born November 12, 1935 in Cairo, Illinois, a son of the late Alvin Tilford and Mary Joyce (McAnally) Barnes Jr.

He married Marcella A. “Pickle” (Schubert) Barnes on January 26, 1957 in Granite City and she survives.

He had worked in advertising for many years with Tri-City Grocery and with the Granite City Press Record. He later owned and operated Super Print in Granite City and retired as the owner of several Rapid Lube stations throughout the Metro East area.

He was a faithful member of Central Christian Church in Granite City and had been a member of the Granite City Elks Lodge No. 1063. Alvin was involved with many organizations throughout his life and enjoyed his days of playing golf, boating and his many travels. He cherished his children and grandchildren and will be remembered for the love and special times shared with family and friends.

In addition to his beloved wife of 64 years, he is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy (Gary) Warren of Edwardsville, Debby (David) Lovett of Royal Palm Beach, Florida, Kathy (Steve) Wehling of Edwardsville and Becky (Phillip) Theabeau of Edwardsville; nine grandchildren and spouses, Jessie (Andrew) Cawvey, Jackie (Travis) Roth, Jeff Gwinnup, Lisa Gwinnup, J.J. Gwinnup, Allison (Josh) Ferry, Emily (James) Washburn, Casey (Kayla) Thebeau and Carly Thebeau; ten great-grandchildren; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Patsy (Pat) Early of Edwardsville and Anne (Richard) Schallert of Granite City; two brothers, Mike Barnes of Granite City and Foster Barnes and partner, Erv Janko of St. Louis; many nieces; nephews; other extended family and friends.

Private family services will be held at Central Christian Church in Granite City on Friday, February 5, 2021 with Reverend Derrell Brame officiating.

A private burial will follow at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
