Elmer Metzger

Elmer Metzger, age 95 of Highland, IL, died Friday, January 08, 2021, at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Highland, IL.

He was born on April 09, 1925, in Bond County, IL, the son of John and Augusta (nee Gantner) Metzger.

On April 24, 1954, he married Betty L.B. Geries. She survives in Highland, IL.

He was a member of Highland Masonic Lodge #583 A.F. & A.M., Woodmen of the World-Camp #105, Laborer’s Local #680, He was a IL Real Estate Licensee, and former member of Teamsters Local #536.

Mr. Metzger was born in Bond County, IL, just east of the Madison County line. He grew up on the family farm and attended Hesse Country School. He graduated from Highland High School in 1943. Following his schooling, he worked on the family farm and on heavy construction sites for Laborer’s Local #680 in Highland. He later became a licensed Realtor. After selling real estate for a number of years, he was employed by the Illinois Department of Transportation for 19 years. He retired from Illinois Department of Transportation and worked for First Student Bus Service for 17 years. Following his marriage, he and his wife lived in Highland prior to moving to the family farm east of Highland where they lived from 1961-1976. They returned to Highland in 1976.

Survivors include: Wife – Betty L.B. Metzger, nee Geries, Highland, IL; Daughter – Tammy Lynn (David) Holdeman, Highland, IL; Son – Rickey E. Metzger, Edwardsville, IL; Grandson – Tyler Alan Holdeman, Highland, IL; Sister – Selma M. Warnecke, Highland, IL; Sister In-Law – Elsie Nungesser, Walnut Creek, CA; Sister In-Law – Sara J. “Sadie” Wiesemeyer, Highland, IL.

He was preceded in death by: Father – John G. Metzger – Died 7/25/1983, Highland, IL; Mother – Augusta J. Metzger, nee Gantner – Died 11/17/1999; Brother – Henry J. Metzger – Died 8/15/2015; Brother – Calvin Metzger – Died 10/2/2013.

Arrangements are being handled by Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, IL.

Private graveside services will be at Highland City Cemetery with Pastor Leonard Pye, officiating.

Interment will follow Highland City Cemetery in Highland, IL.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
