Mr. Jack Wesley Calve’, Sr., age 97, of Granite City, IL died at 2:28 p.m. on February 4, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family. Mr. Calve’ spent his childhood in Edwardsville, IL in LeClaire Village.
Mr Calve’ enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in September 1942 and served as a crewmember aboard the Tacoma-class frigate USS Orange PF-43 until discharged in 1946. The USS Orange received two battle stars in the Pacific Theatre of Operations in World War II.
He served as a Department of the Army Civilian for 31 years until retiring from the U.S. Army Troop Support Command in April 1978 as the Chief of Manpower Management. He attended Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, St. Louis University and the U.S. Army Management Engineering College.
Preceding him in death were his beloved parents: Calvin ‘Cal’ and Bridget ‘Bridgie’ Ann Calve’, nee Murphy; his loving wife of 46 years: Juanita ‘Johnnye’ Calve’, nee Shastid; his daughter: Lesa Ann Calve’; and his in-laws: Betty Ebling, Marion ‘Francie’ Hudson and William Shastid.
Surviving him is son Jack Wesley Calve’ II of Granite City. Also surviving are his in ‘laws Barbara ‘Bobbye’ and Stanley Barnes of Edwardsville and Richard and Phyllis Ficker of Granite City.
Mr. Calve’ was a Frigate Reunion Association member until it disbanded in 2005. He was a Holy Family Catholic Church parishioner.
An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Calve’ enjoyed hunting and fishing. A sporting dog fancier, his favorite dog was a Vizsla named Gyp.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Noon Sat. Feb. 8, 2020 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Granite City with Fr. Jeff Holtman O.F.S. as celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
