Mary Holmes

Mary “Sue” Cecelia (nee Osborn) Holmes, devoted wife, mother and grandmother, passed away on Friday, August 13, 2021 at Meridian Village Care Center in Glen Carbon, IL.

Mary “Sue” was born on January 9, 1933 in Caseyville, IL to George E. Osborn, Sr. and Cecelia (nee Burrelsmann) Osborn. She graduated Collinsville High School in 1951.  Her family established Osborn Cleaners in Collinsville, where she was a co-owner.  Mary “Sue” was a familiar face at the cleaners having worked there from her teenage years until retirement.  She was a great seamstress doing all the repair work at the cleaners and there wasn’t a stain or spot she couldn’t get out, taking great pride in her work.

Mary “Sue” married Harold D. Holmes, Sr. on June 6, 1953.  Together they welcomed Harold “Skip”, David, Steven, James, and Susan, and were married for 55 years.

She was a member of SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church and for many years was involved with the Mississippi Valley Barbershop Chorus in Collinsville.

Mary “Sue” loved camping with her family and friends and were known for camping in the back of their pickup truck out west with friends in their retirement years.  She also loved a lunch day out or a trip to the casino.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George Sr. and Cecelia Osborn; brothers, George and Alvin Osborn; and her husband, Harold D. Holmes.

Surviving are her five children:  Harold “Skip” (Jeanette) Holmes, Jr., David (Lisa) Holmes, Steven Holmes and partner Steve Gibson, James (Terri) Holmes, and Susan (Bill) Hamilton; 9 grandchildren:  Amanda (Chris) Jenkins, Matthew Holmes, Tyler Holmes, Chris (Kristie) Holmes, Trevor (Lisa) Holmes, Robbie (Amanda) Holmes, Stephen (Kelly Johnson) Shylkofski, Nolan Hamilton, Nick Hamilton; 5 great-grandchildren:  Cole, Abigail, Evany, Aleksander and Scott; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 4 – 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at Barry Wilson Funeral Home in Maryville, IL and 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 19, 2021 at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Collinsville. 

Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday with Father John Beveridge celebrant.  Burial will be in Caseyville Cemetery, Caseyville, IL.

Memorials may be made to SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church or Vitas Hospice and will be received at the visitation or can be mailed to the funeral home at 2800 N. Center Street, Maryville, IL 62062.
