ALTON — Alton High School has elevated 2012 graduate and assistant coach JaQuail Townser to head coach of the boys basketball program, with a stated focus on building a championship culture and developing student-athletes on and off the court.
Townser’s program will be based on four core principles: discipline, accountability, toughness and togetherness. While competing for championships remains a goal, the program’s highest priority will be developing student-athletes who excel in the classroom, serve their community and represent Alton High School with character and integrity.
“Our goal is to create a championship culture that prepares our players for success in every aspect of life,” the head coach said. “Winning games is important, but our greatest accomplishment will be helping young men become responsible leaders who make their families, school and community proud.”
Townser, a four-year player and graduate of Jacksonville State University, is expected to bring high expectations to the program, emphasizing maximum effort, selflessness and consistency. Players will be expected to compete with intensity while understanding that no individual is bigger than the team. Roles and opportunities will be earned through daily commitment, accountability and a strong work ethic.
Academic achievement also will be a cornerstone of the program. Student-athletes will be expected to maintain strong academic performance and represent Alton High School with pride in the classroom and throughout the community. Academic accountability will be a non-negotiable expectation, reinforcing the belief that students come before athletes.
“I am excited about the future of Alton High men’s basketball,” the coach said. “My commitment is to build a program that our school and community can be proud of. Together, we will create a culture of excellence that extends far beyond the game, developing young men who are prepared for success in basketball, academics and life.”
The program’s focus under Townser will include success on the scoreboard as well as building a lasting program intended to positively impact students, families and the Alton community.
