EDWARDSVILLE – Southern Illinois University Edwardsville launched a series of commencement ceremonies on Friday, May 5 celebrating the momentous achievement of more than 2,400 eligible graduates in the Vadalabene Center’s First Community Arena. Ceremonies will continue on Saturday, May 6 and Sunday, May 7.
SIUE Chancellor James T. Minor conferred degrees upon the Class of 2023 in the School of Business, School of Nursing and the Graduate School.

Commencement exercises began with the School of Business at 10 a.m. Student speaker Kelly Cruise, who earned a bachelor’s in business administration and psychology, recognized the journey and accomplishments she and her fellow graduates have achieved.
“Class of 2023, you are here today because you have worked, persevered, adapted and dreamed your way to the seat you are in,” said Cruise. “I hope that you recognize and pride yourself on the culmination of years of hard work. You are more prepared than you think you are. May you achieve everything you plan for.”
The School of Nursing recognized its graduates at the 2 p.m. ceremony. Student speaker Sandra Obiebi, who earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice, shared her remarks with her fellow graduates.
“When I think about the journey we have all been through to get here today, the word that comes to mind is perseverance,” said Obiebi. “We have all faced our fair share of challenges along the way. But here we are, standing tall and proud, ready to take on the world. We should all be proud of ourselves.”
Friday’s ceremonies concluded with the Graduate School. Rodaina Mousa, who earned a master’s in English, spoke to her graduating class.
“Fellow graduates, as we embark on our individual journeys, let’s remember the lessons we’ve learned here,” Mousa said. “Let’s stay connected, embrace our humanity, embrace diversity and never be afraid to ask for help.”
