Lee Mathes, 90, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 12:25 p.m. on Friday, October 3, 2014 at Christian Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. He was born February 6, 1924 in Jonesboro, Arkansas, a son of the late William Charles and Anna (McAnelly) Mathes. He retired from the Granite City Housing Authority after many year of service and had previously worked at General Motors and General Cables. The United States veteran proudly served his country with the Army during World War II. He was a dedicated and faithful member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Granite City. He had a special love of music and enjoyed playing the guitar and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. He was very devoted to his family and will always be remembered for the love and special times shared with his wife, children, grandchildren and siblings. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Catherine (Kim) Mathes; son, Leland Mathes and several brothers and sisters.
He is survived by four children and their spouses, Robert and Sharon Mathes of Glen Carbon, Mary Anna and Jim Hendrix of Fenton, Missouri, William and Carol Mathes of Granite City and Gerald and Brenda Mathes of Richland, Missouri; nine grandchildren, Jason, Steven, Karyn, Barbara, Stephanie, Kelly, Sarah, Vanessa and Cynthia; fourteen great grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Mathes of Granite City and William Charles Mathes of Jonesboro, Arkansas; numerous nieces; nephews; other extended family and friends.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Monday, October 6, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church, 2606 Washington Avenue in Granite City on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. with Fr. Manuel Cuizon as celebrant and Fr. Chris Comerford as concelebrant.
Burial with full military honors will be at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville. Memorials may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church and may be accepted at the funeral home. www.irwinchapel.com
