Oscar Whitworth

Oscar B. “Pete” Whitworth, 81 of Granite City passed away on Friday, January 1, 2016 at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City surrounded by his family.

Pete was born on January 19, 1934 in Clinton, AR; a son of the late William T. and Myrtle L. (Burns) Whitworth. Pete was a machinist for over 34 years at Olin Corporation until his retirement in 1999. He was a member of New Testament Baptist Church for over 50 years and proudly served his country in the United States Army. In his free time Pete enjoyed watching western movies and spending time with his family. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He is survived by and will be missed by his wife; Mary E. (Fowler) Whitworth, whom he married on September 29, 1956; his children, Sharon and (Terry) Soncasie of Valmeyer, IL, Douglas Whitworth of Bathgate, ND, Pastor Paul and (Marlena) Whitworth of Plymouth, IN, Carol Kaminski of Granite City, IL; 15 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; sister, Edna Wallace of Parma, MO and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends.

In addition to his parents Pete was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 2 sisters.

In celebration of his life friends may call on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 12:00 p.m. at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City with Pastor Paul Whitworth officiating. Burial will follow at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to New Testament Baptist Church, 1718 Northwinds Drive Waterloo, IL 62298.
