WOOD RIVER – Wood River Fire Department responded for smoke on the second floor at Lewis and Clark Elementary in Wood River on Friday.

The fire appeared to have started in a mechanical area of the Lewis and Clark Elementary basement. Wood River Fire Department requested the help from East Alton Fire Department and Roxana, Edwardsville, and Rosewood Heights Fire Departments. Bethalto Fire Department moved to the Wood Rivers station and Cottage Hills moved to the Bethalto station.

No injuries were reported, and no kids were at the school due to a snow day. The State Fire Marshal’s Office was also requested to the scene to assist in the investigation of the fire.

The superintendent Dr Anderson released a statement about the fire: ” There was an unfortunate incident that occurred on the Lewis & Clark Campus. As some of you may know, there was a small fire at Lewis & Clark Elementary. Fortunately, there we no injuries and only minimal fire damage. Unfortunately, there has been extensive smoke damage throughout the complex making the school unfit for students to attend at this time. The district will utilize emergency days and Act of God days for the week of February 7th through February 11th. There will be no school for the district next week. We will keep parents informed of plans for possible remote learning or alternative school locations as we finalize decisions. Please check our district website and Facebook pages for continued updates. We also want to thank the Wood River Fire Department and the other responding Fire Departments for their quick response in getting the fire under control and a thank you to the Wood River Police Department for their assistance.”
