Several Area Grapplers Advance To The State Meet In Champaign Next Weekend

GRANITE CITY – The Edwardsville Tigers advanced three from the class 3A Granite City sectional while Alton advanced one to the individual state wrestling tournament next weekend in Champaign.

In the 138-pound bracket Edwardsville’s Dylan Gvillo had a bye in the first round of the sectional, in the second round Gvillo had a 9-4 decision over Elijah Munoz from Minooka. In the third round Gvillo pinned Connor Smetana from Lincoln Way Central to advance to the championship match. In the championship match Gvillo dropped a 17-5 mid-decision to Kole Brower from Moline. Gvillo finished with a second-place medal and advanced.

Edwardsville’s Drew Landau wrestled in the 145-pound backet; in the first round he received a bye. In the second round Landau pinned Tyler Starr to advance to the third round. In the third round Austin Perella was injured and Landau moved on to the championship match. Moline’s Noah Tapia had a 12-4 win over Landau.

Jorden Johnson from Edwardsville wrestled in the 152-pound bracket in the first round he received a bye. In the second round Johnson won a 3-1 decision over Jack Marion to move on to the third round. In the third round Johnson had a 12-2 decision over Cameron Knepper to advance to the championship match. Johnson dropped a 5-1 decision to Logan Swaw.

Alton’s 132-pound DeOntae Forest placed fourth and advanced to state. Forest had a pin in the first around over Kaden McShaw, in the second round Forest had a 7-2 decsion over RaMez Watson to advance. In the third round Forsest lost on a tec fall to Nasir Bailey. In the third-place match Forest lost to Granite Citys Dylan Boyd on a pin. Forest placed fourth but still advanced.

Granite City’s Breden Rayl also advanced in the 113-pound bracket to state.

1A Vandalia Sectional

East Alton Wood River Oilers advanced three to the state tournament while Roxana advanced one from the Vandalia Sectional.

Aaron Niemeyer placed 2nd in the 113-pound bracket, Jason Shaw placed third in the 126-pound bracket and Drake Champlin advanced with a fourth place. Roxana’s Braden Johnson took fourth in the 152-pound bracket to advance.

2A  Mahomet (M. Seymour) Sectional

Civic Memorial Eagles was dominate at the Mahomet Sectional. They advanced seven to the state tournament. Bradley Ruckman at 106 placed third, Joey Biciocchi at 132 placed second, Bryce Griffin at 138 pounds placed first, Ben Skaggs placed fourth at 145 pounds. Abe Wojcikiewicz placed first at 170lbs, Colton Carlislie placed first at 182 pound, and Logan Cooper at 285 pounds placed third.
